Austrian Aktienbarometer 2024: Securities ownership rising

Austrians are increasingly focussing on securities for their long-term investments: this is illustrated by the results of the latest Austrian Aktienbarometer 2024 – a survey conducted by the Federation of Austrian Industries, Aktienforum and the Vienna Stock Exchange. According to the study, 27 percent of Austrians already own securities, which corresponds to an increase of two percent compared to last year's survey. To put it in absolute figures: The number of people owning securities increased by 200,000 persons – or the entire city of Linz – to 2.1 million within a year.

Stocks & co. have certainly reached the centre of society, as a look at net income shows. Of those who own stocks, 1.3 million earn less than EUR 3,000. In addition, there was an increase in the number of people with a compulsory (14%, 2023: 11%) or technical college degree (24%, 2023: 22%). Austrian investors are largely focussing on domestic companies: Almost three quarters (72%) of security holders also have Austrian stocks in their portfolios. The potential raises hopes that this trend will continue in the coming years. More than one in five people (21%) who currently do not own any securities are interested in investing.
