> Best Eastern Europe analysts work for Erste Bank
- Erste Bank is the uncontested leader in the ranking for recommendations on small caps from Austria and Eastern Europe (CEE). This was the opinion in the current issue of “European Small Caps Research Yearbook 2008“ published by the London firm, AQ Research Ltd. AQ Research conducts an evaluation every year of the quality of equity research using a merit points system that ranks the recommendations of analysts according to accuracy worldwide at over 50 capital markets.
(Die Presse, 26 August 2008)

> ECB leaves key lending rate unchanged despite economic slowdown – The European Central Bank left the key lending rate unchanged at 4.25% on 4 September despite the economic slowdown. The financial markets had expected this decision due to the high inflation in the euro zone. The next interest rate cut is expected at the earliest for the beginning of 2009. The ECB had raised the reference rate in July for the first time in more than one year as a measure to check inflation, which had risen to a record level in summer. Most analysts interviewed expect the ECB to revise its inflationary expectations for 2009 downwards. This would clear the way for an interest rate cut next year according to the experts. (APA, 4 September 2008)

> Majority of Austrian investment funds suffer losses in August – The turmoil on the stock markets once again negatively affected the
performance of domestic investment funds in August. Most Austrian
funds reported negative y/y performance in August 2008. Of a total of
1,094 funds, 795 reported negative y/y performance according to the
statistics of the Association of Austrian Investment Funds
(Vereinigung Österreichischer Investmentgesellschaften, VÖIG). A
number of 298 funds performed positively. Compared by arithmetic mean
– without considering the fund volume or category – the average
performance of the funds from the end of August 2007 until the end of
August 2008 was minus 8.39 percent and they managed to slightly
contain the losses of July of minus 9.91%. (APA, 8 September 2008)
