> ECB and the British central bank lower key lending rates
- The European Central Bank cut the key lending rate on 6 October by 50 basis points to 3.25%. The move by the Bank of England (BoE) was even more dramatic: It cut the key lending rate by 150 bps from 4.5 percent to 3 percent. The financial markets had expected a large step by the British currency guardians. However, the size came as a surprise, even for experts. The cut by the ECB was estimated at precisely 0.5 percent. The Swiss National Bank (SNB) also lowered the key lending rate by 0.5% today. (APA, 6 Nov 2008)

> Erste Bank does not perceive any risks in Eastern Europe – Erste Group Bank does not yet perceive any effects of the financial crisis in Eastern Europe: "The interbank markets in CEE are still functioning well, and the CEE banks are proving better at raising primary funds than West European banks, and the creditworthiness of investment firms is still stable,” stated Erste Bank. “The fears regarding the credit crunch in CEE are unfounded from a fundamental standpoint in our opinion. The banks in CEE are not affected by the sub-prime crisis and are therefore not forced to make any write-offs.”
(APA, 23 Oct 2008)

> Fed lowers key lending rate to 1 percent – The US Fed lowered the key lending rate on 29 October by 50 bps to one percent. This interest rate cut is another move by the Fed to fight the threatening recession in the US. Already at the beginning of October, it had lowered interest rates by half a percentage point in a concerted action taken with other major central banks. Based on statements by ECB Chief Jean-Claude Trichet, experts firmly believe that the ECB will lower its reference rate again from 3.75% on 6 November.
